The Panthera U3 Light is a welded-frame variant of the adjustable U3, designed to prioritise weight reduction and propulsion efficiency over ongoing adjustability. By removing adjustable frame components, Panthera have been able to significantly reduce overall weight, making the chair easier to lift and noticeably more efficient to self-propel. The trade-off is that the setup cannot be altered later, which is why we generally recommend the U3 Light for experienced wheelchair users who already know their ideal seating position and geometry.
The U3 Light is available in several frame configurations, including Low and High variants to better suit shorter and taller users. A compact tapered Y-front frame can also be specified, which helps reduce overall length and improves manoeuvrability in tighter indoor spaces.
The frame itself uses Panthera’s dual-tube box construction made from chrome molybdenum (a clever combination of chromium, molybdenum, iron, and carbon alloy elements). In practice, this produces a very stiff and responsive chair that translates pushing effort efficiently into forward movement. For active users, this rigidity is one of the key reasons the U3 Light feels so direct and controlled compared to more adjustable designs.
Although the frame is welded, the chair is still built to order in a range of seat widths and can be specified with practical options such as sideguards, push handles, and different handrims. There is less overall customisation than with fully adjustable active wheelchairs, but this is partly offset by the fact that several premium lightweight components are included as standard — such as a carbon fibre axle tube and spinergy X wheels.
While Panthera chairs can be configured to suit a wide range of body sizes, the U3 Light is not intended to offer the same breadth of fine adjustment as some modular active wheelchairs. We find it works best for users who value low weight, responsiveness, and simplicity, and who are confident that their setup requirements are already well established.
