Dreeft Wheels

Dreeft Wheels

Eppur

Dreeft Wheels are an innovative replacement rear wheel system designed for manual wheelchairs. Unlike standard push rims, which require users to slow down using friction from their hands, Dreeft wheels incorporate an integrated braking mechanism directly into the pushrim. This allows the user to control speed and braking more safely and efficiently, particularly when travelling downhill or navigating uneven terrain.

At first glance the wheels look similar to conventional wheelchair wheels, but the pushrim is engineered differently. When pushing forward the wheels behave just like a normal pushrim, allowing smooth propulsion. When the user pulls back on the rim, however, the integrated braking system activates, slowing the chair in a controlled way. This makes it possible to regulate speed without gripping the tyre or using gloves to create friction against the rim.

This braking action can make a significant difference when travelling down slopes, ramps or cambered pavements where maintaining control can otherwise require considerable hand strength. Because braking is built into the pushrim itself, users can slow or stop while maintaining their hands in a natural propulsion position. The design also reduces the heat and friction typically generated when braking against metal pushrims.

Dreeft wheels are designed to fit many common active wheelchair models and can often be installed in place of standard rear wheels without major modification. They are available in several wheel sizes and configurations to suit different wheelchair setups. The system integrates the braking mechanism within the hub and pushrim assembly, keeping the overall design relatively clean and avoiding bulky external braking components.

For wheelchair users who regularly travel outdoors, encounter hills, or simply want more confidence controlling their speed, Dreeft wheels provide a different approach to braking. Rather than relying on hand friction alone, they introduce a mechanical braking action that improves control while keeping propulsion intuitive and familiar.
