Triride HT Compact

Triride HT Compact

Triride

Triride specialise exclusively in powered handbikes, focusing their development entirely on this category rather than producing a broad range of mobility products. As a result, Triride design and manufacture their own motors, control electronics, and software specifically for handbike use, rather than adapting generic systems. In real-world use, this approach delivers strong, controllable performance — whether that’s torque for climbing, confident braking, or consistent cruising over longer distances.

All Triride handbikes are built to order, with a wide range of configuration options to suit individual needs. Handlebar styles and control layouts can be matched to hand function, while wheel size, tyre choice, and battery capacity can be selected based on how and where the handbike will be used. Electronic features include adaptive cruise control, which helps maintain a steady speed even on descents, and Triride’s Intelligent Braking System, designed to improve control and confidence. Both mechanical and hydraulic disc brake options are available depending on riding style and terrain.

Triride handbikes are compatible with the vast majority of active wheelchairs, including models with swing-away legrests. The attachment system allows the handbike to be mounted and removed quickly, making it easy to switch between self-propelling and powered use, as well as simplifying transport in a vehicle. Optional T-stands can assist with mounting and demounting, which can be particularly helpful depending on core strength, balance, and experience.

The Triride Special Compact HT is Triride’s most popular model and sits at the more powerful end of their range. It features a 1400 W high-torque motor, making it particularly capable on steeper gradients, rougher surfaces, and more demanding outdoor routes. When paired with the optional All-Road tyre, the Compact HT is well suited to users who regularly travel beyond smooth pavements and want confident performance across mixed terrain.

Despite this power, the Compact HT remains true to its name. The compact frame and 12-inch front wheel keep the overall size smaller and more manageable than many off-road-focused handbikes. This improves turning circle and manoeuvrability, meaning the Compact HT works well not only outdoors but also in urban environments and, where space allows, indoors. With a frame weight of approximately 11.5 kg, it remains relatively straightforward to lift and transport compared with larger, heavier off-road systems.

Top speed is up to 12.4 mph, with a quoted range of up to 31 miles, depending on battery choice, terrain, rider input, and assist level. In practice, this makes the Compact HT a strong option for users who want a single handbike capable of longer journeys, faster road use, and more adventurous routes, without stepping up to oversized or specialist off-road designs.

Special Compact HT vs Special Light – which is right for you?

The Special Compact HT and Special Light share Triride’s core strengths: in-house electronics, custom configuration, broad wheelchair compatibility, and excellent build quality. The choice between them comes down primarily to power, weight, and intended use.

The Special Light prioritises minimal weight and ease of handling. At around 8.9 kg (with battery removed), it is noticeably easier to lift in and out of a car and suits users who travel frequently, manage their equipment independently, or focus mainly on urban and mixed-use environments. It offers strong performance for its size, but with a more balanced emphasis on portability.

The Special Compact HT, by contrast, is the more performance-focused option. Its 1400 W motor delivers greater torque and confidence on hills, rough ground, and longer outdoor routes, at the cost of a modest increase in weight. Users who regularly tackle challenging terrain, carry additional load, or simply want more headroom in performance often prefer the Compact HT.

In simple terms:

  • Choose the Special Light if low weight, easy lifting, and portability are your top priorities.

  • Choose the Special Compact HT if you want higher torque, stronger outdoor capability, and greater versatility across demanding routes.
