The Permobil M1 is the most straightforward mid-wheel drive powerchair in Permobil’s range. It is designed for people who want Permobil build quality, stability and reliability, but who do not require the full suite of advanced powered seating and reach functions found on higher models.
This makes the M1 a sensible choice where simplicity, durability and ease of use are priorities — particularly when long-term reliability matters more than having every possible powered adjustment.
Mid-wheel drive places the drive wheels beneath the seat, allowing the M1 to turn tightly and predictably indoors. Despite being the entry point to Permobil’s range, the M1 is not an “indoor-only” chair: the robust chassis, large drive wheels and suspension geometry give it confident outdoor performance on pavements and typical uneven ground.
Ride quality and everyday use
The M1 uses the same proven drive unit architecture found across the Permobil M-series, designed to provide a stable, composed drive rather than a lively or twitchy feel. Suspension is tuned for comfort and durability, helping to reduce vibration and fatigue during everyday use.
In practice, this results in a chair that feels calm and predictable — an important consideration for users who value confidence and consistency over outright performance.
Battery capacity and speed options are sufficient for full-day use for most people, and charging systems are designed to be straightforward and reliable rather than complex.
Seating and positioning
Unlike the Corpus-based models (M3, M5 and VS variants), the M1 uses a simpler rehabilitation seating approach. The open seating frame allows a wide range of backrests and cushions to be fitted — from basic contoured options through to more specialist solutions such as ROHO — but with fewer integrated powered adjustments.
The seat height is low, which is particularly helpful for:
Flip-back armrests, swing-away joystick mounts and a folding backrest further support transfers and transport.
Powered seating options are intentionally limited. The M1 can be specified with powered tilt, which provides meaningful pressure redistribution and postural relief, but it does not offer powered recline, Active Height or Active Reach. For many users, this is entirely appropriate — and avoids unnecessary complexity.
Controls and adaptability
The M1 can be configured with a range of control options, including adaptations for users who may need more than a standard joystick. While it does not offer the same depth of drive and seating programmability as higher Permobil models, it remains a solid platform for straightforward, dependable powered mobility.
How the M1 compares within the Permobil range
-
Compared with the M3: the M1 is simpler, lighter and less complex, but offers fewer powered seating and positioning options. The M3 is usually chosen when posture, pressure management or long daily use are more demanding.
-
Compared with the M5: the M1 is significantly more compact and simpler, but does not offer the outdoor capability, elevation or reach functions of the M5.
-
Compared with VS models: the M1 does not provide standing or advanced functional positioning, and is intended for users whose needs can be met without these features.
Who the M1 tends to suit
The M1 is commonly chosen by people who:
-
want Permobil reliability without unnecessary complexity
-
do not require standing or advanced powered seating
-
value ease of transfer and transport
-
need a dependable daily powerchair rather than a highly specialised system
It is also sometimes specified within case management pathways where simplicity, durability and cost-effectiveness are appropriate — while still maintaining a high standard of build and support.
